SUMMER INTERNSHIP DRIVES THE EVOLUTION OF R&D NESTER’S ENERGY AND FLEXIBILITY MARKET SIMULATOR

Between 29 June and 21 August 2026, Tiago Pina, a Master’s student in Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, completed a summer internship at R&D Nester, focused on developing the user interface for the Energy and Flexibility Market Simulator.

The work aimed to enhance the platform’s user experience and facilitate interaction with different energy market and system services products.

During the internship, the user journey was analysed and structured, covering the entire process from authentication and access to market information through to the preparation, validation and submission of bids.

Based on this analysis, a modern, accessible and dynamic web application was developed using technologies such as React, TypeScript and Vite.

The new interface allows users to monitor market data, review their bidding history and results, and create and validate XML files compliant with the IEC 62325 standard.

Interactive dashboards and charts were also developed to display activated power, market depth, marginal prices and the position of bids submitted by users.

The work contributed to making the simulator more intuitive and accessible, while preparing it for the integration of new markets and products.

At the same time, it established a more robust technological foundation for the platform’s future development and its use across different R&D Nester research projects.

Throughout the internship, Tiago Pina strengthened his skills in electricity markets and system services, UX/UI, frontend development, data visualisation, API integration, Docker and cloud application deployment.

The internship stood out for combining energy market expertise with software development, strengthening both the intern’s competencies and R&D Nester’s digital capabilities.
